Mango Industry Snapshot

Australia

  • Australia produces an average of 60,000 tonnes of mangoes per annum, and long-term growth trends indicate that production is growing at 8% per annum compound basis
  • The mango season starts late September and extends through until mid April
  • Mangoes are grown through the sub-tropical and tropical regions of Australia. The major production areas are the Queensland Dry Tropics (Townsville, Burdekin and Bowen), Mareeba, central Queensland, south-east Queensland, northern New South Wales, Darwin and Katherine (NT) and Kununurra and Carnarvon (WA).>
  • The most popular varieties grown and consumed in Australia are:
    o Kensington Pride (also known as the Bowen) – available late September to March
    o R2E2 – available November to February
    o Keitt – available January to March
    o Kent – available January to March
    o Palmer – available January to March
    o Brooks – available February to April
  • Newer varieties available in Australia are:
    o Honeygold – available November to March o Pearl – available January to February
    o Calypso – available late September to March
  • The Australian Mango Industry Association (AMIA) is the industry body representing the Australian mango industry, and works in association with Horticulture Australia to ensure world-standard quality, prosperity and growth for the industry.

Globally

  • There are in excess of 1,000 varieties of mangoes grown across the globe, with world production mainly centred on Asia.
  • India is the largest producer of mangoes with estimated production ranging between 50 and 60 per cent of annual world production.
  • In recent years, the demand for fresh and processed mangoes has increased and production in non-traditional production areas as west Africa, South Africa, Australia, South America and Mexico is increasing.
