About AMIA

Introduction

AMIA was established in 1999 to represent the Australian mango industry and undertake a range of activities on behalf of industry. All mango growers and people in allied industries have an opportunity to become members of AMIA. The annual subscription is set by the Board and reviewed regularly. While all growers who are levy payers have an opportunity to have a say where the levy funds should be invested, only AMIA members have an opportunity to nominate or vote for Board positions.

Structure

AMIA was established as a company limited by guarantee. As a company, AMIA has to abide by the Company’s Act and undertake specific actions to ensure it complies with ASIC rules (Australian Securities Investment Commission). Each member of the company also agrees to abide by the company constitution.

AMIA is recognised by the Federal Government as the body representing the Australian Mango Industry. AMIA works in association with Horticulture Australia to develop programs, funded by the industry levy, where the greatest benefit for investment will be made.

Each horticulture industry that has a national levy also has an Industry Advisory Committee. This Committee is appointed by Horticulture Australia and its principal role is to provide advice on the investment of levy funds, for both R&D and Marketing.

There is no set format as the structure of composition of an IAC. The only similarity is that each IAC should have an independent Chairperson. Each horticultural industry IAC has a slightly different structure.

So, while you need to be a member of AMIA to nominate or vote for Board positions, all growers who are levy payers have a right to know where their levies are being invested. This can be done in a number of ways, including:

  • Attending the annual levy payers meeting
  • Contacting a Board or IAC member
  • Contacting the Industry Development Manager
